Gentlemans agreement II

Later that evening a Cab swung up the door of one of London’s numerous hotels carrying a fashionably late Alex Arthurs. Perfect hair, clean shaven and wearing a black suit with a blue shirt and white tie, he strode casually through the lobby and into the claws of his most irritating old school mate.
“Late as usual Alexander.” Whined the voice from behind Alex
“Shut up Pottersby” replied Alex coolly, ignoring the black suited man with a thinning, suspiciously black hair and a broad flat face.

Once in the functions room he looked out over the spread of tables. A banner by a stage extended welcome to the old boys and girls Southern College. He stood on tiptoes searching the sea of faces for a flash of his old pals.
“What ho!” Came a voice from behind him, he turned to see three men dressed similarly to him leaning casually around the bar.
“Ah, boys, how are we?” he said, offering a hand to each of them in turn.
Adrian Clark, Richard Cartwright and Oliver Jeffrey’s along with Alex had been around together since they had started at school together aged ten, they had beaten each other black and blue on the rugby field, never shied away from bouncing each other in cricket and were not above cheating outrageously in their regular rounds of golf yet they had always stuck firmly together. They had been rather too caddish in their younger days to win the affection of any of their female schoolmates so when the meal began as per usual they found themselves on one of the rowdier all male tables.

The meal passed in a blur of drinks, old jokes, fresh banter and catch up chatter. Most of the all male tables were former rugby players, thunderous laughter and backslapping followed most of the wildly acted out stories from tours and nights outs. As ties loosened the banter began to shoot from table to table, slowly everyone began to mix together again. On the dance floor several old flames rekindled as the air of formality from before dinner relaxed. Alex made hastily for the bar where he bumped into another old friend.
“Lucas Jones, how are you sir” Alex boomed, squeezing Lucas’s hand.
“Excellent, Excellent,” nodded Lucas, Lucas had been a friend of his brothers and had left for Harvard after Alex had finished his second year. Despite the age gap they had got to know each other playing tennis.
“I’ve got a bit of business to talk over with you tomorrow, give me a call” shouted Lucas over the music, tucking a business card into Alex’s breast pocket. “Must be off, flight to catch,” he smiled. They shook hands again and Alex rejoined the revelry.

The rest of the night passed in a blur and the next morning rolled around with Alex feeling rather worse for wear.  ’09:00’ glowed green from an alarm clock by the bed. ‘My clocks red’ Alex thought as he rubbed at his eyes and rolled over. He right shoulder touched something warm and soft as he turned. His eyes widened and he propped himself up on his front and saw a fan of blonde hair across purple pillows. ‘My pillows are white’ he thought as his mind flashed back to the previous night trying to work out who it was. Blonde hair, slim, he searched for other clues, he vaguely remembered green eyes and full red lips. ‘Carla!’ He thought. This wasn’t the first time this had happened, he hoped it wouldn’t be the last as she stirred and rolled over to face him.

Alex banged through the front door at midday, jacket over his arm, a button missing from his shirt and a smear of lipstick on his cheek. Stephanie was sitting on the couch, head bent over the coffee table looking through several sheets of folders. As she heard his footsteps she stood up,
“Pleasant evening?” she inquired. Alex nodded, grateful to see two mugs set by the bacon and eggs on the counter. He drank the one that smelled least like coffee in one and sipped at the other while he attacked the food. Before he went upstairs to shower he dug the business card Lucas had given him out of his jacket pocket and handed it to Stephanie.
“You have a meeting with Lucas on Monday at half past eleven” said Stephanie as Alex sat down next on her on the couch. She had placed three pint glasses full of water in front of him and a bottle of Lucozade sport. “You’re filling in at bow for the rowing clubs eight tomorow, I submitted the fabric selections and the furniture for the unfinished rooms arrives on Wednesday and the cricket club has asked if you can play a game of 20:20 this afternoon from four.”
“I assume you know about the credit card problems?” asked Alex tentatively “as wonderful as you have been in this short space of time I’m afraid your employment may be a little short term.”
“Not to worry, I shall be around for a while yet” Stephanie responded with a wry smile. An awkward quiet descended until Stephanie got up to hunt down Alex’s cricket bag. Alex stared glumly out of the window hoping that it would rain again so he wouldn’t have to play.

Stamping in angrily from the cricket, Alex tossed his bag down and strode into the kitchen, he swung open the fridge and plucked out a bottle of mineral water. He sat on his usual place the counter and stared out the windows again. After a few minutes of turning over the in-swinger that had got him out for a duck he looked around the Kitchen. The fruit in the fruit bowl was there to be eaten, not juiced and added to cocktails and the pots, pans, crockery and cutlery had finally been taken out of it’s packaging. Stephanie’s short employment had already made his apartment more homely. The fact that Stephanie had accomplished in a week what had been on the agenda for months, making the penthouse inhabitable, putting furniture in all the rooms, Henrys gap year party venue as well as sorting out his jet lag five minutes after walking through the door. He looked up again to see a metal strip along the top of the panorama windows. She had even had blinds put up. On his way to bed he pressed a series of buttons he had previously thought were broken light switches and the metal blinds rolled down to black out the large living space.

A Gentlemans Agreement - I

Sorry i never finished the Dr Who thing, got bored/busy/drunk/insert excuse. Basically its a happy ending and humanities saved. So the same thing doesn't happen again I'm no longer publishing until the full story is complete. Part 2 and 3 for this are written and publishing time with be between midnight and Midday every Thursday. Enjoy :)

Rain drummed against the penthouse windows as Alex shuffled through the front door, dragging his suitcase meekly behind him. Soaked from the brief moments in the rain and exhausted from the flight from Canada he let the front door slam as leaned heavily against the wall to kick of his shoes. He dropped his hand luggage and walked into the open plan living space. To his right was the kitchen, straight ahead was the lounge and to the left the dining table. In the middle of the room a spiral staircase wound up into the lofty ceiling. Alex couldn’t be bothered to climb the stairs to bed, he merely dragged his body over to the black leather couch, shrugged off his soaked jacket and crashed onto the deep cushions. He groaned as he wrapped a blanket round himself and fell asleep.

He awoke with a start, the intercom was flashing and making a shrill ringing noise. With the blanket covering his damp head and wrapped loosely around his he heaved himself of the couch and pattered to the phone hanging on the wall, he could feel his damp socks on the cold slate floor.
“Yes?” he asked blearily
“Hello, I’m Stephanie, May I come in?”
He buzzed her through the main door and left the front door open. When Stephanie walked in she found Alexander sitting on the kitchen counter staring vacantly out at the dreary London sky. His normally neat hair stuck up at all angles and he had a line of stitching printed on his face from resting his head on the arm of the couch.
“I’m given to understand that you require a personal assistant”
Alex nodded and pulled the blanket back over his head like a hood, hopping gently down off the counter and shuffling off to collapse over the couch again.
As he lay there face down he was vaguely aware of some clattering around in the kitchen.
“Here, this should wake you up.”
Alex had been craving coffee since he had first heard the intercom but his favorite coffee in London came from a small Café in Covent Garden,
“Too far!” he began to mumble, hearing a mug clang down on the coffee table
Just the smell of it began to restore Alex, however it didn’t smell quite like any coffee he had smelt before, it smelt smoky, with a touch of citrus. He opened one eye curiously and saw a steaming mug sitting mere centimeters away on the coffee table.

He levered himself up gracelessly and stretched an arm towards the cup, taking it between his slow fingers he lifted it first to his eye. It definitely looked like black coffee. He was in no position to be fussy and so he raised the mug and downed it in one. The mixture singed his tongue as it ran down his throat, his eyes widened and his fingers began to tingle.
“I say!” he exclaimed, leaping to his feet. He threw off the blanket and skipped off up the stairs to the bathroom.

When he reappeared Stephanie was sitting at the breakfast bar, she was a tall girl with dark hair. Though not striking to look at she had a certain beauty about her accentuated by the pair of red rimmed glassed perched on the bridge of her nose. She turned to look at him with glittering hazel eyes,
“Feeling better?” she asked, her voice had a song like quality to it, a chipper, joyful note, a bright contrast to the miserable weather that lashed against the windows.
“Rather” Alex responded, slipping onto the chair next to her in front of a steaming bowl of porridge with a swirl of honey in the middle and another mug of coffee. He began to mix the porridge while scanning over the array of papers Stephanie had spread out on the counter.
“Your grocery delivery arrives at eleven this morning, I have ordered some fabric samples for you to go through, you have to look for a venue for Henry’s party when he comes back from his gap year and you have an old boys dinner starting at seven pm. Your father is also taking you to lunch, he thinks its time you started to make something of yourself.” Alex’s mouth began to protest when she shushed him quietly and began to run through list of nightclubs and function rooms she had compiled. Glad of the change of subject Alex sat happily looking down the short list amazing at how quickly Stephanie had picked up the ball and started to run with it.

The lecture had begun almost immediately, Alex had never known his father to raise his voice, but when he got irate his ears would go red and he would rap his knuckles on the table. Daniel Arthurs was close to this point now, his short muscular frame filled his tailored suit, the years of desk work hadn’t shown on his midriff and his hands were hard and callused from weekend sailing. The only thing he had in common with the run of the mill executive was his salt and pepper hair.
“You are becoming a drone Alexander. A useless lay about and I can’t stand to have doing nothing any longer.” His knuckles tapping the table in time with his words. Alexander smiled at the P.G. Wodehouse reference however his father didn’t appreciate it. “What’s so funny? Your Brother is going to make partner at Anderson and Tate, your sisters doing well at IBM and all you have done since finishing sixth form is play around with your investments and bounce from country to country like a playboy!”
“I made twelve thousand pounds last quarter.” Protested Alex, a look of surprise briefly passed across his fathers face.
“How much of your trust fund have you got in stocks?” asked Daniel, leaning in close to his son.
“One hundred thousand” responded Alex nonchalantly. Daniels eyes widened a little in amazement at Alex’s response. He sat back in his chair a little bewildered.
“You are returning over double what my investments manager is,” he mumbled shaking his head. “But its still not enough to support you should that go wrong. You still need to find a proper job. I’m canceling your credit cards on Tuesday. You are on your own with your trust fund from now on.”

They table fell awkwardly silent for a little while after their food arrived,
“The next thing is this charitable donation you made in Canada. Why didn’t you talk to me before using money from the foundation?”
Alex took a minute to explain the touching causes he had heard about in the speeches, grateful that he had been paying attention for once. He put special emphasis on an imaginary donation deadline. His father already thought him reckless with money. He didn’t want to further aggravate his father’s suspicions by telling him he to donate quickly to rub it in the face of a fat man wearing a Lamborghini shirt.

His fathers Bentley roared off down the sodden street as Alex stood in the restaurants foyer waiting for the Maître d to call him a cab, Alex liked to talk to this Maître d because he found the mans French accent quite entertaining.
“There is no need for a taxi sir, there is a car for you outside.”

When Alex stepped through the door he saw his black Range Rover Sport sitting by the curb. He looked through the passenger window and saw Stephanie at the wheel, waving for him to hurry up.
“Groceries sorted, Lunch done, and there’s the short list of venues” She deposited his IPad into his lap and swung the car out onto the road.
“How did you know my passcode?” he asked, she merely smiled coyly and kept here eyes firmly fixed on the road.

Avengers Who III

The Doctor returned to the ship’s control room in the TARDIS,
“Did you get it?” asked the director as the doctor walked out of the TARDIS
“Even if I had the Tesseract it wouldn’t do much good because we would then have a homicidal megalomaniac walking around with a grudge.” Said the doctor, jumping into another chair and sliding over to the machine. “Where are you?” asked the doctor as he tapped some commands into the keyboard, scanned a few things with his sonic screwdriver and then sat back watching the big screen above his head, ‘Out of range of sensors’ flashed across the screen. “Well that’s new.” Said the puzzled Doctor, jumping out of the chair and pacing up and down with his elbows tucked in again, swapping the hand his chin was resting in every time he turned. The Director looked on in silence while the doctor mumbled under his breath, occasionally he turned to the machine and playing with a switch or changed a wire but the same message flashed on the screen.
“What does ‘out of range of sensors’ mean?” quizzed the Director
“Exactly what it says” responded the doctor
“So we need to go closer to the sensor?”
Suddenly the doctor stopped dead. A bust of laughter came from his lips and he jumped ecstatically into the air.
“You are a genius!” he pointed at the Director “We aren’t out of range of the sensors, we have satellites, the Tesseract is out of range of the sensors.” The doctor slid into the chair and tapped in more commands, “These are the sensors I’m using.” explained the doctor as dots appeared across the map. “They are the impact chambers of particle accelerators. I set my scanner to find the Tesseract and that’s exactly what it did but it moved out of range of the sensors, meaning it can only of gone one way. West!” he sat looking content for a moment.
“How will you follow him?” asked the director looking concerned, “West is very non-specific.”
“Easy, the Dalektanium orb has already interacted with the Tesseract so it should be able to provide the TARDIS with a reading that we can track.”

The doctor leapt from his chair and sprinted to the TARDIS, as he reached the door he turned back to the room.
“I’m going to need a helper, not you director, you stay here and hold the fort. You!” he pointed to a tall girl with lustrous red hair tied into a tight ponytail. “You remind me of an Old friend,” he smiled, leaning around the door of the TARDIS offering an outstretched hand.
The director nodded his permission to her and she nervously stood up and ran to the TARDIS. As the doctor led her through the door she slowed in amazement.
“It’s….it’s…..”
“Bigger on the inside?” suggested the doctor, swinging round the control panel pulling levers and spinning dials, “it’s also a time machine, telepathic and it has a swimming pool.” As the TARDIS began to dematerialize it began to vibrate lightly. Gradually the vibrations became more violent until the who room bucked and shock violently. Puff’s of smoke and sparks shot from the controls. The redhead sat down heavily on the sofa and gripped tightly into the arms until the TARDIS banged heavily onto the ground and settled.
“Sorry, she normally flies a bit smother than that.” The Doctor assured her gazing quizzically at one of the screens.
“What happened?” questioned the girl,
“Sorry, I never quite got your name?” said the doctor, never taking his eye of the screen
“Sarah”
“Hello Sarah” said the doctor, walking over to the other side of the TARDIS offering a hand, “nice to meet you. Basically what’s happened is every where go we leave a trail of our existence, time line if you will. Something very important happened to me in New York a few years ago and because my timeline is so strong here the time paradox sensor got over loaded. Nothing to worry about, right this way.” The doctor babbled hurriedly, he gestured towards the door, ushering Sarah outside.

They stepped onto soft green grass, they could hear water splashing against stone and the sun warmed their faces as looked up to see the statue of liberty towering over them. Tourist’s milled around paying no attention to the police box that had just appeared but posed for pictures with the skyline of New York behind them. The doctor swung his sonic screwdriver in an arc until it buzz became higher pitched. He raised and lowered it until it began to make a higher more shrill noise, he shut his left eye and squinted down his arm. The glowing blue tip of the sonic screwdriver was pointing directly at the top of the empire state building.
“Of course!” cursed the doctor, pounding the side of his head “Why did you tell him Dalektanium?” he fumed, tucking his elbows in again and stalking up and down.
“What’s Dalektanium?” asked a confused looking Sarah
“There’s a race called the Daleks and they are very clever and very cruel.” Began the doctor still pacing, “They once tried to convert the population of New York into Dalek-Human hybrids and they powered it with the metal their armor was made out of attached like an antennae to the top of the Empire state building.” The doctor needlessly pointed out the empire state building “I stopped them but I never removed their armor, if Loki has found it then I need to start doing something clever.” As the doctor finished he stopped dead, he raised his right hand and scratched the top of his head. Leaning backwards to look up at the statue of liberty. He ran over to a woman in a bright pink dress and sunglasses and snatched the  holding a model of the statue of liberty out of her hand.
“Can I borrow this?” he asked as he scanned it with his screwdriver. “Thank you!” he chimed tossing it back to her and running back to the TARDIS, turning to the bewildered Sarah as he dashed through the door,
“I have a plan!”

Sarah followed him into the TARDIS and found him tearing through a box underneath the control room.
“What are you looking for?” she asked nervously as WWII uniform, a red converse and a Stetson with a bullet hole flew past her.
“A clock!” came the doctors response as he flung an Umbrella over his shoulder.
“Well don’t you where a watch?” said Sarah as she fumbled at her wrist producing a slim steel watch with a red analogue face.
“I’m a time traveller, what would be the point in wearing a watch, it would always be wrong!” shouted the doctor as he jumped up holding a big wooden box. He flipped it open to reveal dozens of watches, analogue and digital, some with leather straps, others on ornate chains as he plunged his hand in and rummaged through, producing a glowing golden watch at the end of a chain,
“This one got me in trouble with Henry VIII,” he sighed dropping it back into the box “and this,” he held up a plain leather and silver wrist watch “was the one I wore in Bletchley park during the second world war”, he reminisced.

He took the stairs two at a time as he ran up and out towards a door in the base of the statue of liberty. Clutching the box under his arm his opened the door with his sonic and dashed inside.
“What are you doing?” squeaked Sarah, dodging the doctor ad he barreled back into the TARDIS, remerging hauling a box of wires and cable
“Ever heard of a weeping angel?” he asked as he shuttled backwards and forwards, “They are a race as old as the universe” the doctor spoke in snippets as he carried more boxes that looked full of junk backwards and forward, “they feed of potential time energy” the next box appeared to contain several cracked alarm clocks. “Basically, things that could have been,” the doctor paused breathless by the Statue’s door, “a small amount it emitted every time you make a decision. But the Angels, they need allot more, so they transport you back in time and feed of the potential decades”.
“What’s that got to do with us Doctor?”
“Simple, Weeping angels are statues, I once thought the statue of liberty was an angel. There’s an old saying ‘that which holds the images of an Angel itself becomes and Angel’ yet when I scanned that model earlier it showed no trace of being an angel, therefore, it’s not a true angel yet it can still feed off potential time” the doctor held up one of the cracked alarm clocks, a blue one with bells on top. “We’re going to harness it!” he gave the clock and quick blast with his sonic screwdriver and threw it up in the air. As it climbed into the hollows of the statue suddenly the hands began to spin, first backwards, then forwards, then alternately.

Avengers who - Part II

The Doctor straightened his bow tie and took a few steps forward looking around casually. He pulled a metal baton with a white handle and a blue tip out of his pocket, he pressed a button on the side and it made an electronic buzzing noise as he held it in front of him and spun around. Before holding it up in front of his face to read something.
“Looks like I landed on something important, Whoops!” he said casually.
“Sir, please drop the…..” began the director,
“That worked brilliantly last time didn’t it!” chimed in the doctor “Alien appears, scary powerful weapon in their hand. Except this isn’t a weapon.” He brandished the probe by his head, “It’s a screwdriver, and so you can put down those guns and listen to me.”
The soldiers lowered their weapons and the director rested on his heels, defiantly crossed his arms across his chest.
“What ever has just run out of the door is carrying something I believe you call a Tesseract and you have been experimenting on it but you have no idea what it is, you think it’s a door but it kind of is except it’s a door on all six sides but its more an entryway without a door so it’s a bit like a doorframe but stuff in the middle so its basically not a door or a doorframe” he garbled, beginning to slow his speech, “it’s more. A thing. With blue stuff in it.” He stood for a second looking at all the blank faces and paused. “That really wasn’t helpful.” He stopped again,
“I know!” He exclaimed, “Take me to your leader!” He beamed,
“I am him” announced the Director
“That was anti-climatic,” muttered the Doctor, “Then take me to your ship!”

The Doctor and the Director stood in the center of the bridge, banks of computers surrounded them and people bustled between them handing out dossiers and giving instructions.
“This is the nerve center” began the Director, “From here we are searching every corner of the planet for the Gamma radiation signature of the Tesseract.”
“What about the interference?” questioned the Doctor “If high levels of interference precedes the opening of some kind of portal then assuming Loki isn’t coming alone he going to need to open it up again” The doctor jumped into an empty wheeled chair and shot across the room into his TARDIS.

From inside the blue box came the sound of clanging mental and breaking wood.
“What we need to track is….” Came the doctors muffled voice. The Director approached the blue box apprehensively.
“The interference as you call it, what I call it, is consecutive spatial rift energy.”
As the Director slowly reached out his hand and pushed the door inwards the Doctor appeared, hair ruffled carrying a large steel hemisphere with several orbs of different colors protruding from it.
“Before you ask, very good storage system!” said the doctor dropping sizeable hemisphere onto the chair and locking the TARDIS behind him.
He pushed the device into the middle of the room and began to pull wires out of various computers and tie them together in a seemingly random order. He seized a passing supervisor and handed the knot of cables to her,
“Can you hold that?” he asked before ducking under her arm and scampering off to collect more bits.

Within a few minutes he had created a large pile of hard drive with wires sticking out everywhere and the hemisphere sitting in the middle.
“This is a very big very powerful thing! ” he announced, gesturing grandly towards his creation.
“It looks like the Frankenstein of ‘things’” Responded the Director
“It does I suppose,” said the doctor, pensively tucking his elbows in and resting his chin on his hand. “Lets hope it’s not as temperamental” he whispered before flinging his arms wide clutching his Sonic Screwdriver. He pressed the button on the screwdriver and the whole machine began to whir. He dashed frantically to a keyboard that stuck randomly out of the side of the machine and began tapping furiously. Next he skipped to a old radio unit sitting on top of a TV showing a series of vertical pink stripes on an green background and poked a few buttons before standing in front of the hemisphere device and poking it with his screwdriver.
The hemisphere began to rise, the case was spinning rapidly while the orbs on top staying motionless and began to glow. The base began to spin so rapidly that it’s bearing screamed. The orbs began to shake and suddenly one made of a dull metal studded with little dimples began to revolve the opposite way and rise above its base. The Doctor’s face fell; he clutched his screwdriver and let out a horrified bark.
“Dalektanium!”
“Dalek-what?” demanded the Director
“Dalektanium, it’s what Daleks are made out of silly!” said the doctor, “Now I know what responds to it I can track it and it is currently in….” he swung round and looked up at a large screen hanging from the ceiling “Germany!”

The sky was dark when Loki stalked into the research center, his armor and cloak replaced with a Tuxedo he blended in perfectly with the other guests except for the silver tipped cane. The Handle contained the glowing blue Orb and he swung it casually as he swaggered into the party.

As Loki approached the main room a security guard halted him and asked for his Invite. He casually tapped him on the chest with the handle of his cane and the bouncer snapped to attention and casually waved Loki through.

Everyone in the room Loki walked into was looking up at a grey haired gentleman standing on a dais. The man was clearing his throat as if ready for a speech, the projector screen behind him showed Dr. Myas Elburn, Head of Research. Loki leapt onto the dais and seized Dr. Elburn by the back of the neck. He swung him round and slammed him down onto to table arrayed with awards for the year. Medals and trophies scattered as the table collapsed under the force. The guests began to scream and panic descended as they fought tooth and nail for the exits. The fire alarm went off and soaked the fleeing crowd. The room rapidly emptied leaving trembling head researcher, the mesmerized security guard and Dr. J Gatsby lounging casually against a plinth sporting a statue of Athena, the Greek good of wisdom.
Loki reached down with the staff and tapped the Head Researchers chest, staring into his eyes as they glazed over, turned pitch black and then snapped back to normal. He released the now relaxed man and stormed out of the Atrium, pausing only to blast the head of Athena.

As he strode out of the building his clothing began to morph, replacing black silk with golden armor, broad gilded shoulder plates and helm with golden horns swooping back over his head. He Cane flickered and grew, turning into an tall kingly scepter. He stood his ground at the top of the research institutes steps watching as the waves of panicked guests spread around the streets of Stuttgart, mixed with the general public and further spreading their fear. His body flickered and a duplicate of him appeared in the South West corner of the Square, then another in the South East until the square was surrounded. The Original Loki continued to stand on the top of the steps staring out over the panic.
“Kneel before me!” he commanded loudly, he voice emerging from the mouths of his duplicate.
“I Said Kneel!” He bellowed, pounding his staff into the ground. A flash of blue light flickered between the staff’s of his Duplicate and the sea of people dropped, heads bowed.
“Is not this simpler?” Raising his arms victoriously “Is this not your natural state?” He began to pace forward, the crowd parting before him. “It’s the unspoken truth of Humanity, but you crave subjugation. The bright lure of freedom diminished your life’s joy in a mad scramble for power. Your identity is that you were made to be ruled. In the end, you will always kneel” He finished with a whisper. His malicious smile began to break into a laugh when an old man grunted as he pushed himself up from his knees.
“Not to men like you.” Responded the elderly gentleman, the laugh dying on Loki’s lips.
“There are no men like me.” He responded coyly
“There are always men like you.” Announced the man with a shake of his head
“Look to your elder people, let him be an example” mocked Loki, raising his staff, the tip glowing with energy
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you!” A clear voice cut through the air and Loki spun around to see a man in a tweed jacket and bow tie with a fez at a jaunty angle on top of his head. The man stood casually, leaning against a railing at the top of the steps Loki had just walked down.
“Who are you?” Loki’s leering voice wavering slightly “Though one must admire the occasional human exhibits remarkable bravery, or stupidity” continued Loki, confidence leaking back into his voice.
“I’m not a Human” Boomed the doctor standing straight and planting his feet defiantly, “I’m a Time Lord of Gallifrey, sworn protector of this planet and you!” He spat out the word and jabbed his finger as Loki. “Are just another upstart want to be conqueror that’s forgotten who I am, the protector, the avenger, the mad man in a box. Call me what you will but remember one thing as you crawl back, beaten to your home. I am the defeater of gods and the guardian of humanity and this planet is protected!”
Loki sneered, trying to hide the slight Panicky look in his eyes. He raised his staff and pointed it at the doctor. Nothing happened. He jabbed it at him a few times before banging the blue orb a few times with the heel of his hand then poking it at the doctor again.
“Is your stick not working?” Inquired the doctor, “My sonic does that sometimes, it’s very annoying! Might be because of this?” Loki looked up as the doctor plucked the fez from his head and between two glowing bolts of blue energy hovered a spinning metallic sphere. The doctor grasped the bronze vice that held the whirring orb and lifted the spinning device off his head. Behind the orb trailed a fat black cable. All eyes followed the cable down the steps and into a manhole cover.
“This is an orb of Dalektanium. Daleks despite their shortcomings a very clever and they can power themselves of nearly anything including consecutive spatial rift energy.” The doctor spoke rapidly as Loki’s sneer melted from his lips.
“It just so happens that I am very clever and that your Tesseract is a big lump of somewhere else’s stuff that oozes so much spatial rift energy that there is enough for this ball of Dalektanium that it’s now spinning at one hundred thousand revs per minute, so fast that to stop it ripping a hole in the time space continuum I’ve wired it into the whole of Western Europe’s power grid. What all this mean Loki me old son, is that your stick couldn’t hurt anyone unless you threw it at them.” He finished his speech with a flourishing smile as Loki let out a cry of anguish, flickered on final time and vanished.

Cheers erupted from the crowd as people hugged and kissed each other. The doctor stood at the top of the steps with the orb slowly reducing in speed. The lights began to fade until the square was briefly plunged into darkness. A second or two later when the lights came back on the jubilant crowd looked to where their rescuer had been standing and saw that he had gone too.
